I believe, that providing you keep an eye on the spiderling, and ensure the prey isn’t worrying or attacking the spiderling, 24 to 48 hours after molting will work well. Obligate burrowers like Haplopelma lividum (Cobalt Blue) need tall enclosures so they can make a deep tunnel. With that said, I do know some very successful tarantula breeders who will offer their spiderling food just 24 hours after they complete their molt. This gives the spiderling enough time to fully harden before trying to eat, especially the spiderling’s fangs, which also have to harden after a molt. In my experience, it is best to wait at least 48 hours after a spiderling has finished molting before offering it prey. How Soon After Molting Can You Feed A Spiderling? If you add to that stress by trying to feed your spiderling you can cause your tarantula some serious problems, and you could even kill it through stress. Molting is a very stressful time for any tarantula. A spiderling that is in pre-molt (which literally means preparing to molt), is incredibly vulnerable to attack, and it will be totally defenseless whilst actually molting. If you have any concerns your spiderling might fall foul of its prey, you can always pre-kill the prey by removing its head with a sharp blade, or just squashing its head, typically meaning the prey continues to move, stimulating a feeding response from the spiderling.Ĭan You Feed A Spiderling That is in Pre-Molt? A cricket or mealworm could see a molting spiderling as an easy meal, and before you know it, the prey has become the predator. Tarantulas are extremely vulnerable when molting, and that is even more true for spiderlings. Never leave live prey in a spiderlings enclosure for more than 24 hours, especially if there is a chance the spiderling is in pre-molt. ![]() If the spiderling hasn’t eaten in that time, I will remove the prey and try again in a day or two. I will leave the food in with the spiderling for between 12 and 24 hours. They clearly have a strong instinct to run clear of potential danger. I very rarely actually see my spiderlings eating. Almost every time, the spiderling’s reaction is to run away from the prey. When I feed my spiderlings, I will typically drop the food into the spiderling’s enclosure. In my experience, the maximum size of food a spiderling should be given is something around 2/3 the size of the spiderling’s body size (not including its legs). It is essential any food given to the spiderling is not larger than the spiderling. Spiderlings are typically shy and vulnerable to attack from their prey. ![]()
